Guess Who’s Back!?

A long time ago, I posted a wish list on my now defunct blog.  Basically, it expressed three items I wanted and gave reasons why. I have managed to get one of those items!

That item would be the MPC 2000xl. I bought it about  2 weeks ago off of eBay. Originally, I did not win the auction but the person who did win did not pay within his allotted time. The seller asked me if I wanted to buy it for my highest bid which was 250. I didn’t think about it, I just bought it.

After I got my MPC 2000xl in the mail, I decided not to use Reason 4 anymore until I master the MPC. So far so good. I haven’t opened Reason since September 14th . I feel like I’m pretty decent on it. I can pretty much make it do whatever I want.

A lot of people didn’t understand the change or why I chose to do this. Its simple, making beats on the computer is too easy. Basically, you get everything you need all at once. Infinite sample time, numerous routing opens, infinite sounds, made tracks to mix with, eq settings. Everything is set up for you already.

I’m not trying to take away from anyone that makes music with a computer. Im just saying, it’s a bit easier. Yes, in the end it comes down to talent but creativity comes from making something out of nothing. With old hardware like ASR 10’s, MPC’s, and etc you have to find a ways to make the machine do what you want. You find creative ways to sample, time stretch, and make the options you don’t have possible.

So far, I made a couple of joints that I liked. The only thing is saving them. Sometimes I forget and turn off the machine and come back to no beats. I gotta get used to that. Another thing is mixing inside the MPC and then mixing inside of my DAW. It comes out completely different because I record everything separately. I guess this is either gonna force me to get all my tracks mixed by my engineer or learn to engineer myself.

Enough of that here are some beats I dropped via twitter that I was working on
