Pardon The Polo

Like every other black kid from the inner city I was poor. I was fortunate enough to have both parents in my household but with bills and both of them providing food for us to eat we couldn’t get new clothes all the time. We got new clothes twice a year as I can recall. At the beginning of the school year for our school uniforms and secondly on Christmas where we’d get regular clothes but mainly underwear.

From 8 to14, I got picked on a lot for my clothes in school. It fucked me up because I didn’t understand why they picked on me. I didn’t get what was so special about name brands.

Around 13, 14 I began skimming though Eastbay books and other fashion catalogs looking at designs. Nikes is one of the first brands that really stuck with me. It was so simple yet deluxe (although I don’t give a shit about Air Forces). Then it happened. One day a fellow classmate began picking on me for not having a logo on my polo.

I looked at his shirt and he had the almighty horse on it. I fell in love, with the logo of course. At that moment I told myself, I would wear nothing but Polo when I got older. I swore to be Polo’d down. Now many years later, I’m not Polo’d down to the sucks but I have a really respectable amount of Polo. A couple of big pony joints, p-wings, jackets, sweaters, rugbys, and hoodies. Nothing to crazy.

This winter I’m getting Polo’d down.

I’m not turning into a Lo Life because if you really know the legacy of the Lo Lifes, you now you cannot recreate that. I’ve already been arrested for shoplifting so I think I’ll pass on that. I did do some research about the Lo Lifes and I have mad respect for them. I’m not repping them or anything crazy but we both look at Polo as the same thing, a come up.

See, the Lo Lifes stole Polo to come up. It was an indication of power, brotherhood, and success for them. For me Polo represents the come up. All these other brands, its too many of em. I might get a tee shirt or something but polos, rugbys, hoodies, jackets, and sweaters will always be copped from Uncle Ralphie. Thanks to the kid that said something to me when I was younger. You helped more than you hurt.

    • I actually watched that a while ago. He has a generous amount but he doesn’t really have any pieces worth talking about. If he pulled out some Snow Beach, P-Wing, Polo Sport, Polo Bear shit I’d be a lil thrilled. Son got none of that.

  1. Okay, this comment is actually for the posting below this one but I’m too lazy to go back and click on the appropriate entry, so ANYWAY…

Cool tattoo dude!! Is that your first?
